At our classical Pilates studio in Brussels, we are often asked:
“Should I choose Pilates or weight training?
Our answer is simple: Why choose?
Both classical Pilates and strength training offer unique benefits, and together they can help you build a stronger, more mobile, and more resilient body.
How Classical Pilates Builds Strength Differently
Pilates is a complete system of strength. It develops the whole body through movement, breath, concentration, control, stretch, and a deep mind-body connection. Joseph Pilates himself was not only the creator of this method—he was also a bodybuilder, boxer, and movement enthusiast who believed in balanced, uniform development of the body.
The springs used in Classical Pilates are not there simply to make exercises harder or easier. Unlike lifting weights, Pilates springs create tension that the body learns to resist and control. Rather than pushing against a fixed weight, you work with resistance that changes throughout the movement, requiring precision, coordination, and control.
Much of the strength developed in Contrology Pilates comes from controlling the movement as the springs pull you back, asking the muscles to lengthen under tension instead of simply shortening to produce force. This allows you to strengthen the body through its full range of motion while maintaining alignment and control.
Mat work offers another unique relationship with strength. Here, gravity becomes both a teacher and a training partner. Sometimes gravity supports the body, allowing unnecessary tension to release so movement becomes freer and more efficient. At other times, gravity becomes the resistance you work against, using your own body weight to build strength, stability, and control. Learning when to yield to gravity and when to organize yourself against it is one of the qualities that makes Pilates so intelligent.
Through this combination of spring resistance, body weight, and mindful movement, the nervous system learns to organize movement more efficiently. We work through fascia, joints, bones, deep stabilizing muscles, and larger muscle groups so the body becomes stronger, more functional, and more balanced over time.
But Classical Pilates goes beyond building muscles alone. It also improves posture, mobility, flexibility, balance, coordination, breathing, and body awareness, helping the body function with more ease and freedom. The work creates space between the vertebrae, opens the chest and hips, encourages healthier movement patterns, and allows the body to move with greater efficiency. It is strength with intelligence and awareness.
Pilates vs Weight Training: The Benefits of Both
That said, weight training and resistance training also offer unique benefits. Progressively loading the muscles and bones can increase maximal strength, support bone density, improve power, and help maintain muscle mass throughout life. Rather than seeing Pilates and weight training as competing methods, we see them as complementary. Pilates develops control, alignment, mobility, and efficient movement patterns that can make strength training safer and more effective, while weight training can provide levels of external load that Pilates was never designed to replace.
Joseph Pilates encouraged other forms of movement too. His method was never meant to exist in isolation. He boxed, explored different physical disciplines, worked with injured people, and understood movement as something alive and adaptable.
We share this philosophy in our studio 💛
Why We Recommend Combining Pilates and Strength Training
Whether your goal is to build strength, improve posture, prevent injuries, move without pain, or age well, Pilates provides a strong foundation for lifelong movement.
Pilates can become the foundation that supports everything else you love doing. In my own life, Pilates has opened the joy of practicing other activities with more confidence and balance. I enjoy kickboxing, weight lifting, running, swimming, breathwork, and simple restorative movement depending on what my body needs at the moment.
Because health is not about pushing harder all the time.
It is about learning to listen. To feel. To respond.
Some days the body asks for strength. Some days for mobility, rest, or breath. We believe in balance rather than extremes. We also believe movement is only one part of wellness. Social connection, nourishing food, walks in nature, laughter, rest, and meaningful experiences all matter too.
There is no pressure to achieve everything perfectly. The goal is to feel better in your body and more connected to yourself.
